Courtney Act's "To Russia With Love" - Song & Video Review

Not shy about my obsession with everything drag and the hilarious reality show, RuPaul's Drag Race. I may even don blonde extensions and fabulous eye shadow to make my way onto the fierce competition. That would be a dream come true!

Before the official premiere of the show's sure-to-be epic sixth season on February 24, immediate front runner and former Australian Idol contestant Courtney Act, aka Shane Jenek, is raising awareness on the human rights fight currently taking place in Russia with the release of her first single in four years, "To Russia With Love", which premiered on Valentine's Day. The song itself is a well-crafted pop number shedding light on the need for universal love, especially during dire times for many LGBT individuals dealing with unconstitutional laws and unnecessary violence under the rule of Vladimir Putin.

Last night, around midnight to be exact, Act revealed the accompanying music video for her catchy yet meaningful new single and it works wonders at delivering the true sentiment behind the pop production. While the performer gives face and body for days during most of the three-minute visual, interwoven scenes of her male identity are shown sharing passionate moments with his lover on the steps of the Kremlin. The finished product is equally fierce, touching and beautiful. Another solid visual creation from Act following the release of her "Welcome to Disgraceland" video in 2010.

"Naked lines traveling, lighting up everything, wicked minds waiting, why can't I see your face, get your ass over here," the artist sings before the heartfelt chorus kicks in. With her reality show background, Act does have the vocal abilities necessary to carry a pop track and she shines on the glowing production, with just enough drag sass to keep her new found fans satisfied. The music video is a solid release, one that put an emphasis on Act's flawless features as well as the tragedy in Russia.

After briefly meeting Act in Austin before the announcement of her Drag Race appearance, I have quickly become a new supporter of her work and talent. The woman is gorgeous, sincere and has great comedic timing. From her performances on Australian Idol to her already scene stealing moments on Drag Race and appearance in Lady Gaga's "Applause" lyric video, Act continues to impress with "To Russia With Love". It's not the generic dance fluff we are used to hearing from past queens, this release actually has some substance!
