10 Do’s and Don’ts of Clean Eating
Looking to clean up your diet but not sure how to make a start? In this article, Beauty and Tips take a look at the 10 do’s and don’ts of clean eating.
It’s a new year which means a new you. For many of us, this means that we’re determined to eat better and spruce up our diet, replacing junk with fruit and processed foods with fresh vegetables. However, this often isn’t as easy as it sounds as there’s plenty of pitfalls that you can fall into, as we’ll soon find out. More than anything, it’s important to note that clean eating should be a lifestyle. It kicks out the bad stuff, welcomes in the good and improves your wellbeing, both physical and mental. To make sure you’re doing it right, let’s take a look at the 10 do’s and don’ts of clean eating.
Don’t Miss Breakfast
When we’re trying to lose weight, it’s very tempting to give up breakfast. In fact, lots of people don’t even eat breakfast, so skipping it is very easy but it doesn’t mean you’re eating cleaner. Instead, it means you’re making an unwise dietary choice. Breakfast is the meal that fires up your metabolism and kicks it into gear. When done right, it fuels your body with the right nutrients that keep you going until lunch and sets the tone. If you skip breakfast, you run the risk that you’ll raid the candy machine at work instead. Go for a hearty, healthy breakfast. If necessary, get up a bit earlier than usual to give yourself some time. Scrambled eggs and salmon is always a winner, but a bowl of oatmeal, mixed berries, seeds and fresh fruit is also a great way to start the day.
Do Drink Lots of Water
People say that water is boring, but since it’s pretty much the elixir of life that sustains all living things, it can’t be that boring. Plants need it to survive and so do you. However, mere survival isn’t enough; if you want to thrive, you’re going to need to drink at least 5-8 glasses of water per day from now on. It’s easy to do. Check in with a glass of water when you first wake up, pour yourself a glass for each meal and drink one or two more glasses throughout the day and in the evening. Eating clean is all about doing the right things and nothing is more right than drinking water. Not only does it hydrate you, but it can also fill you up, so that you avoid snacking on junk.
Don’t Shop On An Empty Stomach
If you go shopping on an empty stomach, there’s always the risk that you’ll shop with your eyes. The burgers and pizzas will catch your attention and this is not cool. Instead, write your list beforehand and always go shopping on a full stomach.
Do Plan Ahead
Planning ahead means you always know what you’ll be eating each week, and it will reduce the risk that you’ll end up with empty cupboards. And when that happens, the temptation is always to order a takeaway. It will only take a bit of time to plan your weekly meals and it’s well worth it.
Don’t Drink Lots of Alcohol
You must have known this one was coming! If you’re serious about eating cleaner, it’s time to cut back on the alcohol.
Alcohol can be fun and you don’t need to cut it out of your life altogether. But if you have a glass of wine every night after work, it’s a good idea to cut your intake back to just the weekends. And even then try to drink alcohol in moderation. Technically, alcohol is a poison, it offers zero nutritional value and if we were being super strict, we’d tell you to avoid it altogether.
Do Read The Labels
If you don’t usually read the labels before buying, now is the time to adopt this particular habit. Even the products you’ve always thought were healthy might not be all that they seem, and it’s only be reading the label can you get the proper lowdown on what’s actually in your food. It sounds incredibly tedious but if you really do want to start eating cleaner, we’re afraid this is something you’ll just have to get used to. If a product has ingredients with names that are longer than your arm, avoid.
Don’t Get Stressed!
When some of us get into cleaner eating, it’s unfortunately way too easy to get stressed by it all. However, clean eating is a lifestyle choice and, as such, it’s super important that you don’t become stressed by it. Just because you’ve eaten a trace of wheat or a bit of sugar, you don’t need to lose your head. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with eating a piece of cake now and then, as long as your main game is centred around unprocessed foods, lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Do Eat Good Fats
There exist two types of fats: good fats and bad ones. The bad ones should be avoided but the good ones – otherwise known as mono saturated fats – can and must be embraced. Fats are given a rough time but they’re a key macro nutrient that your body needs the right amount of. Good fats can lower cholesterol and maintain healthy blood sugar levels while also keeping us satisfied after eating. You can find good fats in the products likes of olive oil, avocados and nuts.
Don’t Serve Massive Portions
In the western world, we’ve got used to eating our food off gigantic plates. However, over in Japan they eat little and often. Just because you’re going clean, it doesn’t mean you can eat massive servings all the time. Instead, you should learn how to control your portions and keep things small.
Do Snack Smartly
Now that you’re eating cleaner you’re still allowed to snack. However, you need to snack smartly. This means snacking on the likes of berries, nuts, seeds and grapes instead of candy and chocolate. Healthy snacks will still fill you up, but what they won’t do is pile on the pounds.
Stay happy!
