So some of you might wan to ask the question, "Why Iron Snakes?" With the new codex out I could easily write a competitive list for a more established chapter. So why don't I go with one of the more mainstream chapters? Well, most of my decision revolves around my love for ancient history. Indeed, I would have likely majored in Ancient History, Classical Studies, or general History had my parents not footed the bill for University. So after reading Dan Abnett's book, Brothers of the Snake, I felt I had to make a force of Iron Snakes.
My original idea focusing on the Iron Snakes was simply to create a single squad to showcase one of the Notable squads not really visible in Abnett's book. The more I thought about the idea though the more I really wanted to work on a full force. I kept having ideas for poses pop into my head, objective markers floated through my dreams, and I even sat down at work to sketch out a display board for when I fully finished the force. Thus was born Battleforce Xenophon.
Now, before I could buy miniatures for this army I had to come up with an army list. Luckily for me the release date for the new Space Marine codex drew near. I sat down and went over the old codex, careful to avoid any units or traits that rumors mentioned disappearing, and I picked out what I wanted in a rough sense. I knew I wanted Landspeeders. I knew I wanted a troop heavy, yet mechanized, army. I also remembered that the Iron Snake petitioners (Scouts) don't go to combat with their phratry brothers.
About a month before the new codex hit store shelves for retail the local GW shop recieved it's preview copy. I literally took half a day off from work and ran over to peruse it's pages and plan out my Iron Snake army. The list below reflects, what I think, a reasonable Iron Snake army would look like. I know it has little close combat, but, in the end there is very little in the codex that would reflect the unique wargear combination of Bolter, Lance, and Shield used by the Iron Snakes. So in the end I put together a very shooting oriented list and decided that the Grecian phalanx style wargear would be best represented by modeling as opposed to actual rules. Without further delay, here is the list minus any sort of point values that might disturb GW lawyers;
Chapter Master Seydon (Represented by Pedro Kantor)
Notable Squad Parthus (Sternguard)
(Power Weapon, Melta Bombs, Heavy Flamer x2, Rhino)
Notable Squad Veii (Sternguard)
(Power Fist, Combi-Melta x3, Rhino)
Ironclad Dreadnought Lepidus
(Twin Heavy Flamers, Assault Launchers)
Tactical Squad Aegis
(Power Fist, Melta Gun, Missile Launcher, Razorback)
Tactical Squad Nophon
(Melta Bombs, Plasma Gun, Lascannon, Rhino)
Lanspeeder Squadron Hephaestus
(3x Landspeeder with Multi-melta)
Whirlwind
Vindicator
Total Points = 1850
So now a little reasoning behind my choices. I figured Pedro Kantor would easily fill teh shoes for Chapter Master Seydon. In addition to already being a chapter master he would allow the Notable Squads (Sternguard) to capture objectives. In literature the Notables always play a significant role in any chapter engagements and thus I thought this ability alone would make these squads seem much more Notable than anything else. Origanally I had anticipated taking Calgar and multiple honor guard squads to represent the Notables, but, that choice proved far too expensive and for 1850 points would have taken up half the army for a single character and 20 models. That's without transportation and minimal upgrades.
The Notable squads I have listed bear little resemblance to the literature. Gone are the sea lances, shields, apothecary, and standard. I've even axed the idea of heavy weapons as I want the Sternguard to remain mobile. The meltas should help mitigate any vehicles attacking the squad and the heavy flamers will help keep the hordes at bay once I fall upon an objective.
So after I picked out the list I had to buy miniatures. A lot of miniatures. In fact, I should probably have bought more so I could acquire all the bits I wanted to craft my army. Nonetheless what I ended up with was nothing short of amazing.

So welcome to my blog and come on back for more fun! Next time? Paint Scheme!
